Since being Minister of Health, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Thi Trung Chien creates a good impression of an intelligent, flexible but determined woman. The impression that no one can deny is the successful control of the SARS epidemic and the A/H1N1 flu. During the epidemic, she directly chaired meetings and directed the synchronous implementation of activities of the National Steering Committee for SARS epidemic prevention, directing the division, receiving patients, gathering scientists to study for identify syndromes, treatment protocols, disease surveillance, timely issue many guidelines for disease prevention and control in sensitive areas such as borders, crowded places... She worked directly with WHO experts to propose ideas to limit deaths, take effective measures to minimize disease transmission and directly visit health facilities during the epidemic to encourage medical staffs and patients under treatment.
She is the first female Minister of Health with many contributions in the field of population (winning the United Nations Population Award in 1999) and in the field of health.
She led to gain a draft to submit to the Politburo to issue Resolution No. 46-NQ/TW on February 23, 2005 for protection, care and improvement of people's health in the new situation” that led the Health Sector towards the purpose of a socialist-oriented market economy in 3 golden words” Equality - Efficiency - Development). For the first time, the Medicine and Pharmacy sector is in the right position in the direction of the Party: “The medical practitioners is a special profession that needs to be selected, trained, employed and specially treated.”
She was also an advisor for the Government to issue Decision 139/QD-TTg on medical examination and treatment policy supporting the poor people to access high quality medical services, making an important contribution to improving the health of the poor people.
